There's no doubt that HTML5 games will, sooner or later, take over flash games both in number and in device support. However, HTML5 still has a lot of catching up to do.
With more than 50,000 flash games currently circulating the net, it's highly unlikely that any surfer hasn't come across and played one. Flash games come in different shapes and sizes. Some of the most common themes are animal, shooting and puzzles. You will also find some anime-inspired and top comics flash games.
I started getting hooked into casual more than a year ago, when we started working on a game aggregation website. After a more than a thousand games, I learned to love a select few - the most entertaining and challenging of them all.
Here are my 10 favorite flash games.
1. Canabalt

Canabalt is an action-packed on the run game. Your goal is to run as far as you can without dying. Collapsing building, faling debris and many more obstacles awaits your journey.
2. Doodle God 2

Form all the elements that make up our world by combining existing elements. You start with the basic - Eart, Water, Fire and Air. I love this game so much that I posted a Doodle God 2 Elements Combination Guide a couple of months ago.
3. Upgrade Complete

Upgrade Complete is an amazing space shooter with a funny twist. Instead of just upgrading your sacecraft, you need to upgrade every aspect of the game. Yest, that's right! So, you need to buy the game preloader, the play button, some additional effects and more!
4. Combat Outpost II: Desert Strike

This is a realtime war strategy game. Your mission is to capture enemy bases, while protecting your own outposts.
5. Reachin' Pichin

Reachin' Pichin has similarities with Upgrade Complete. In the game, you have to upgrade or level-up a small creature so he/she can fly as high as he/she can. I played this game for more than 2 hours just to unlock all three possible evolutions.
6. Warfare 1944

Warfare 1944 is a sequel to the successful realtime strategy Warfare 1917. Both games have the same gameplay: conquer enemy-held territories. 1944 introduces more troop movements, flanking and many more.
7. The Last Stand

The Last Stand is a zombie apocalypse-inspired game. As of this day, there are three games from this series: The Last Stand, The Last Stand 2 and The Last Stand: Union City.
8. 2 Many Bugs

Whenever someone asks me to define what casual game is, I always point them to 2 Many Bugs. It has a really simple mission - merge bugs of the same color together. You can complete the game in less than 20 minutes. And, most of all, it's addictive.
9. Atomic Puzzle 2

As the name suggests, it's a puzzle game that involves atoms (molecules, to be exact). Your mission is to remove all the atoms in a molecule.
Atomic Puzzle is one of the few flash games with really cool and smooth effects.
10. Bloons TD

Bloons Tower Defense is an all-time hit. In total, there are now 5 Bloons TD games. (The link above points to the latest Bloons TD 5.)
Your mission is to destroy all balloons passing by the maze. Sound simple? Go ahead and try it.
Addendum
This was suppose to be a list of just 10 games but I recently came across an awesome zombie shooter...
Decision 2: New City

If you've been playing casual games, you might have played one of the games in The Last Stand series. Decision and Decision: New City is the series' spiritual successor. It's a little more complex, incorporating different genres like shooting, strategy, tower defense and equipment upgrade.
